Today, Escalante is a western town surrounded by clean air, intriguing landscape, wildlife and archeology. Although it offers modern accommodations, it still has the quiet charm and warm hospitality that can only be found in a small rural community. Boulder, Utah, just 28 miles east of Escalante on Scenic , is perched at the intersection of the Burr Trail Road and , providing a beautiful, rustic beginning for a trek down into Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Year round activities are plentiful in the Escalante/Boulder area. Sportsmen can enjoy fishing in clean mountain lakes and streams, or hunting a variety of game. Hikers can discover numerous mountain trails and desert canyons. There are many trails which Mountain bikes can use, but they must stay on the trails. Photographers will want to bring several lenses to capture everything from vast panoramas to minute life forms. There are lots of places for riding off-road vehicles and snowmobiles, cross country skiing, horseback riding, picnicking, camping, and sightseeing.

Visitors will want to leave time to explore the places and artifacts left by the ancient civilizations that once lived in the canyons and mountains that surround Escalante and Boulder. If you should come across an archaeological site, it is very important that these precious resources are not disturbed for future visitors and for scientific examination. Cultural and historical sites are protected by federal and Utah state laws.
